Our survey of vets in Varna shows that

there is SUPPORT, WILLINGNESS and CAPACITY

for a mass neutering programme for street cats in Varna!

In March-May 2025, we offered a questionnaire to 30 vets in Varna to gain insight into the street cat crisis in Varna and their opinions on a municipal mass neutering programme. 24 filled in the questionnaire. Here are the results:

THE PROBLEM

Number of street cats currently treated at all 24 vets
5208 street cats per year
Number of feline poisoning cases currently treated per year at all 24 vets
696 cases per year

THE SOLUTION

Number of vets that support a municipal mass neutering programme for street cats
24 vets (all the vets surveyed)
Number that wish to participate in a municipal mass neutering programme for street cats
19 vets
Total potential neutering capacity of the 19 vets that wish to participate in a municipal mass neutering programme for street cats
9820 street cats per year
Median price at which vets would be willing to neuter street cats as part of a municipal mass neutering programme (average for male/female)
80 lv

Why did we decide to spend time driving around to 30 vets all across Varna Municipality?

  • We are currently working on a draft programme for a municipally run mass neutering programme for street cats that adheres to article 56 in the Animal Protection Law.
  • Later in the year, we will try to meet with each and every one of Varna’s 51 municipal councillors (and also the municipal staff of course) to present this draft programme.
  • We wanted to make sure that the claims we make (e.g. that X number of cats can be neutered per year) are based on evidence. So we decided to collect this evidence directly from the vets in Varna Municipality.
